Quarndon Live
& Local: The Old Dance School, 26th February 2010
As
with the above and below items, not a QUADS event, but QUADS secretary Rob
Snell is organising a Quarndon Live & Local event at Quarndon Village Hall
on Friday 26th February 2010.
The Old Dance School are a young, vibrant 6-piece
music group, who play an intoxicating mixture of acoustic, folk and world
music.
It's an
exhilarating concoction of explosive, white-knuckle music which has been
blowing up a storm on the festival scene this last year. The twinkly-eyed
group features dueling fiddles, hair-raising world percussion and their
intricate compositions evoke images of wind-swept headlands and wild
vertical adventures. More details at
www.quarndonliveandlocal.co.uk
Championed by BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris, The
Old Dance School have been hailed as one of the
most exciting new folk bands to have emerged on the acoustic / folk scene in
the last two years. Tickets are £8.50 (£6.00 older
children/students), available from Rob and Sophie Snell, 01332 840007 or
email robandsophie@hotmail.com.
Doors/Bar open at 7.30pm, music starts 8pm.
Frank Stone's
Great Escape, 8th March 2010

QUADS life member Frank
Stone, now aged 87, was a very active member for many years. He appeared in
our first play in 1946, The Importance of Being Ernest. As well as regular
acting throughout the 50's/60's/70's he was involved in stage construction
and management until 1977.
It was Frank's
idea to knock through the wall of the then much smaller hall, to form the
stage area we have today. He mentioned this idea to James Richardson, who
was also involved in the society at the time (1950's?). Some time later, a
slightly puzzled vicar came to see Frank carrying a cheque for £6000 from
Haddon Richardson, James's father, a very generous donation which paid for
much of the stage area extension.
Through the Kate Humble
edition of Who Do You Think You Are (Frank was interviewed for the
programme), it recently came to light that Frank was in Stalag Luft III, the
WWII prisoner of war camp immortalised in the film The Great Escape. Former
Stalag Luft III POW's are shown above.
Quarndon Cricket Club
have arranged for Frank to give an illustrated talk on this on Monday 8th
March 2010, 7 til 9pm, at Quarndon Village Hall, Church Road, Quarndon DE22
5JA. The title is 'The True Story of The Great Escape: Stalag Luft III: A
Personal Account by Frank Stone'. Tickets are £5, available from Neil
Shorrock, 01332 840702.
